Keeping the River Clean

We are working hard to keep the river clean. Whether one is fishing, birdwatching or floating the river in a canoe, trash on the bank and in the river detracts from the experience.

Each spring (usually in April), we sponsor a shoreline cleanup activity. Several dozen volunteers spend a Saturday picking up trash that has accumulated at shoreline areas available to the public. The Anderson County Department of Transportation works in cooperation with us and provides transportation to haul trash to a landfill. The Tennessee Valley Authority also cooperates and provides equipment and vehicles.

In 2001, we initiated a major instream cleanup effort for the 13-mile tailwater. During
summer of 2001, we have held three trash removal days; and to date, we have removed over 1,000 tires from theriver, and over 3,000 from a dry stream bed that feeds into the river. We have also removed several hundred pounds of other trash.

Anderson County and TVA have been valuable partners in this effort. The county has furnished trucks to haul trash to landfills; and inmates from the county detention center have been of valuable assistance in removing tires from the river. TVA has provided transportation, boats and equipment.

We plan to continue our annual spring shoreline clean ups and will continue to work to remove all tires and trash form the river.
