On March 13, 2000 the Clinch River Chapter unanimously voted to become a partner in the Coal Creek Clean Stream Initiative ( CCCSI ). At that time there was another group seeking to improve conditions in the watershed--the Coal Creek Flood Prevention Committee. On June 2, 2000, CCCSI and the committee decided to join together and formed a new organization called the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation (CCWF).
The Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited supports the undertakings of the CCWF for the following reasons.
Long-term protection of the Clinch River trout fishery - More data is needed to help understand the dynamics of the Clinch River tailwater trout fishery so that it can be protected and enhanced. The CCWF project offers opportunities toward that end. Specifically, it has the potential to increase awareness of local, state and federal officials and agencies; and the public. This could result in natural resource agencies and local governments directing more resources and attention to the Clinch
Water quality improvements - The Coal Creek watershed comprises an area of approximately 40 square miles. The area was heavily mined for coal before the 1978 Surface Mining Conservation and Reclamation Act was passed by Congress. Consequently, the watershed has been impacted by abandoned mines. These mines continue to erode and are the source of significant silt loads into Coal Creek and the Clinch River. Reduction of runoff to mitigate flooding could reduce silt loading into the Clinch.
Environmental education - The CCWF presents important opportunity for enhancing the environmental awarness of the youth of Anderson County. A goal of the Foundation is to work with middle school and high school age students to enhance their understanding of aquatic biology and natural resources stewardship.
If you have any questions concerning our role in the CCWF, you may contact our chapter spokesman, John Thurman.
