Kids Fish Free Day
7 June 2008
See photos below!

The Clinch River Chapter's Kids Fish Free Day event is all about a peaceful, relaxing, fun, educational experience on the river.  We teach the kids not only fishing techniques, but how the river works and the importance of caring for and preserving our beautiful environment.  They get one-on-one attention.

This year, we had the perfect number of kids... perfect number of volunteers... and perfect weather (well, it was a little too hot for June).  Over 110 kids, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends gathered on the banks of the Clinch River at Miller Island.

The experience would not have been so great if it were not for the fine group of volunteers from the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited, TVA, TWRA, and friends.

The day was held on the Tennessee statewide “Free Fishing Day” when no fishing license was required.  The Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited in cooperation with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) sponsored the event between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  The activities took place at the TVA Miller Island Access on the Clinch River in Norris.  TWRA stocked fish for the event.  TVA kindly held off their generation for the hours of the event.

Volunteers were on hand to teach kids to bait, spin, and fly fish.  The kids could participate in donning waders to wade the river to fish, take boat rides, learn the art of fly tying, and obtain personal guide services.  Equipment was available for loan to children.  There were also free hot dogs and goodies, and drawings for prizes!

That little girl caught this Brown Trout!

Buzz Buffington obtained fly tying supplies and chapter members Eddy Whitson, Frances Oates, and Mark Brown taught the art of tying flies.

Thanks to Justin Batterberg, TVA aquatic biology contractor, for arranging for the loan of waders and life vests to keep the kids safe and for bringing them along with TVA boats.

Thanks to Bill Shipman Terry Douglas, Steve Brown, Dick Geiger (and one other person that Bill can't remember) for providing drinks and Buzz Buffington for bringing prizes for the kids.

Reporters from area newspapers attended and let the kids know how important this day was for them.

Congratulations to the grown-ups for taking the time to bring their kids to this event and giving them a great experience with nature.

Thanks to all the volunteers and friends who helped out today.  Also, thanks to the staff of All Occasions Party Rentals for their prompt, courteous service in the delivery and set-up of the tents, tables, and chairs.

Thanks to C.R. Outfitters of Norris for providing a drift boat and guide to take kids on rides.
