Steve Brown performs redd survey work with the assistance of three members of the University of Tennessee Wildlife & Fisheries Society. Measurement's taken include shape, size, location of the redd depression; and length of the tailspill.
Pictured at left is a untended redd near Miller Island. The redd is the copper colored area near the middle of the photo.
Trout often spawn near or under limbs and fallen trees. Note the redd in the lower left corner.
In a tailwater like the Clinch, water levels fluctuate wildly. This redd was left high and dry after the water level dropped to minimum flow. Note the marble-size rock substrate that the female trout selected to make her redd in.
The redd in this photo is difficult to see; it is on the right side. The tailspill associated with this redd measured 18 feet in length.
