PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR YOUR CALENDAR: MONTHLY MEETINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC The Clinch River Chapter Trout Unlimited meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Norris, Tennessee. *DIRECTIONS to St. Francis' Episcopal Church:* I-75 North to Norris/Clinton exit, turn towards Norris to Highway 441, turn left toward Norris Dam. Travel about 1 mile and turn right on West Norris Road. St. Francis' Episcopal Church is about 3 blocks on the left. We meet upstairs in the Parish Hall.
Second annual Great Smoky Mountains Aquatic Biology and Trout Fishing Adventure Applications are open now for the second annual Great Smoky Mountains Aquatic Biology and Trout Fishing Adventure for middle school girls and boys, sponsored by the Tennessee Council of Trout Unlimited. This year's adventure will be June 18–23 at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Summer Adventure is designed to give kids an awareness, appreciation and understanding of the importance of our nation’s aquatic resources with an emphasis on conservation, protection and restoration of coldwater ecosystems. Participants will learn about stream ecology, brook trout restoration, stream physics and chemistry, fishing etiquette and aquatic entomology. They will experience fly tying and fly fishing along with hiking and swimming. GSMIT is in Walker Valley on the banks of Little River’s Middle Prong, a coldwater stream containing brook, brown and rainbow trout. Facilities include dormitories, dining hall, classrooms, outdoor meeting shelters, bookstore/gift shop and full-time professional staff. Summer Adventure 2012 will begin on Monday afternoon, June 18, and end at noon on Saturday, June 23. Boys and girls 12 to 15 years old as of June 18 are eligible to apply; Trout Unlimited will accept a total of 12 participants. Tuition is $488; insurance coverage is supplied by GSMIT. READ MORE -------------------->		A new website has been created for Summer Adventure 2012 by students at Anderson County Career and Technical Center—high schoolers working on behalf of middle schoolers! Youngsters interested in attending 2012 Summer Adventure must complete an application form on the new website, http://www.tntroutadventure.org. Application deadline is March 1, 2012; selections will be made by March 15. Applications should be mailed or e-mailed to: John Thurman, P.O. Box 546, Norris, TN 37828, jthur727@bellsouth.net. When families are notified that their child has been selected, they will be provided with a GSMIT registration form; TU will be happy to help families complete this form. All applicants will be notified of their selection status no later than March 20, 2012.

RESULTS OF TIRE ROUND-UP: Check out photos! On Saturday, August 14th,two hundred ninety-nine tires, three rims and a hubcap, were wrestled from the Clinch from the short stretch between the Highway 61 bridge and the Anderson County jail by 13 in-river volunteers, a six- man Litter Grant crew and two Bingham Tire volunteers. And we didn't get 'em all before it was time to stop -- we left a whole bunch of tires for next year! The routine was to dig out the tires, pile them in boats, ferry them to the boat ramp at the southeast end of the bridge and load them in a Bingham Tire truck; Bingham will transport them to the tire recycling center. A total of four boats were provided by TVA (two), Scott Hahn and Bill Shipman. We only sank one boat (too many tires onboard), and it was raised without damage. The workers were: Clinch River Chapter members and friends in the river, Joyce Anderson, Steve Brown, Jim Ferguson, Dan Freeman, Dick Geiger, Scott Hahn, Denny McMahan, Aaron and Andrew Morgan, Frances Oates, Bill Shipman, John Thurman and Jerry Van Fossen; from Bingham Tire, Thomas Tedder and Trenton Matthews; and the Litter Grant crew, Anderson County Deputy Sheriff Rodney Lineberger with John Barnes, Johnathan Burress, Jonathan Childs, Billy Davis and Lawrence Gilson.

Clinch River Trout Unlimited members and friends held their annual shoreline/roadside clean-up on as part of Keep Anderson County Beautiful/Keep America Beautiful. Twenty volunteers cleared *seventy bags* of trash along the Clinch River area in Anderson County. Trout Unlimited chapters across the country held similar events on Saturday. The chapter has undertaken a project to help Boy Scouts earn merit badges associated with conservation. The job of a counselor is to help the Boy Scout with the requirements, and when all requirements are met, sign a certificate certifying that the Scout has satisfied the requirements. It is not a time consuming job, and we know that we have members of the chapter qualified to serve as counselors. Chapter member Terry Douglas watched a demo on the DIY Network about 5 years ago and as his wife says, "became obsessed" with the hobby. Terry studied everything he could find on building rods and has made 28 rods since he started and he can't quit. Terry brought a couple of his finished rods and also some of the bamboo at different stages of the process and explained the basics of the process from start to finish at our October 2007 meeting. Clinch River Trout Study Results TWRA conducts annual electro-shocking studies on the Clinch River tailwater as part of its trout management plan. According to Mr. Jim Habera, TWRA Region IV Coldwater Fisheries Manager, "The attached graphs show our mean electrofishing catch rates (for the 12 monitoring stations) since 1996. Catch rates went down in 2004 and 2005 because of the high flows in the tailwater, but came back nicely in 2006. In fact, we reached or exceeded our management plan objectives for trout 14" and over (30/hr.) and for trout 18" and over (8/hr.) in '06. We had exceeded the management plan objective for trout 7" and over (200/hr.) in 2003, but the catch rate fell off in '04 and '05. It's on the way back up now (about 170/hr. in '06).”
